Modern aircraft fought in WWI. The SE5 was one of the better fighters. The Americans did well with liquid-cooled engines. When WWI started, aircraft similar to the Bleriot were facing each other in the skies of Belgium. Those wing warping pursuits constitued very elementary air warfare. It had become more modern by the time the SE5 was in combat in 1917.
