I worked with the plugged-in sound a long time and finally got an acceptable sound through the amplifier.  This shows that I want the presence all the way off, as I do the treble and  middle range EQ,  and I want bass equalizer full up, and middle frequency break at 7 kc.  If the volume is anywhere around 50% then I can control the volume through the amplifier and still have the sound I want.
